Gay Christian conference
20th March 2009
GCN, the Gay Christian Network, organizes a big conference once a year for all those who are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Christians of all denominations, and their families.
To date it's always been held in the USA, and in early January, to be able to obtain the best discount at the conference hotel.
The next conference will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, from January 7th - 10th, 2010.
I was blessed to be able to go to the 2008 conference last year, which took place in Washington D.C., and it's difficult to put into words what a mountain top experience it was.
It is simply amazing to have a group of hundreds of GLBT Christians and friends all in one place for several days, and to finally meet people one has been interacting with on the Internet on the GCN site. Strong bonds are formed, support is given, prayers are shared.
There are also very good speakers there, and various small groups that appeal to different kinds of people, and it's often difficult to choose which to attend as so many are so interesting.
The testimony evening on the Saturday night is a very powerful night, and often heart-breaking to hear, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
And then there is the worship ! With so many Christian denominations represented on GCN, it must be daunting to put together something that will speak to everyone and include everyone. Yet GCN manages it !
Having been Catholic all my life, and rather traditionalist, I didn't quite know what to expect. I was sure some of it was going to be alien to me, yet I wanted to experience it all, because in the end we are all one big family of Christ, and I like to experience new ways of worship.
Little did I know what a powerful effect it would have on me ! The worship had prayers, songs and elements from many different denominations all blended into one amazing experience. I cried when I saw my brothers and sisters of other denominations so filled with the Holy Spirit through their own way of worshipping God. It was very moving.
On the Sunday morning, while I'd already received the Eucharist in a Catholic mass organized by one of our Catholic priests, I still took part in the general communion that was given at the end of the conference. It didn't have the same significance to me as the Catholic Eucharist, but it meant sharing with my brothers and sisters of other denominations, and being part of that one big Christian family that we are.
It was one of the most powerful week-ends in my life... and I'm not even GLBT. I can only imagine the blessings a GCN conference must be for someone who is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, and Christian.
If you are GLBT and Christian and not yet booked for the conference, I strongly encourage you to go if you're able to. It will be a week-end you never forget.
